The art of Turkish carpets, which began with the Pazyryk carpet and evolved until the 20th century, experienced its second golden age after the Seljuk era, starting in the 16th century with the carpets woven in and around the city of Uşak.

Uşak carpets are famous Turkish carpets woven in Western Anatolia, particularly in and around the city of Uşak, starting from the 15th century during the Ottoman period. Uşak carpets are considered one of the most important examples of Turkish carpet artistry and were typically produced for European palaces, churches, and grand residences. These carpets are distinguished by their high-quality craftsmanship, elegant motifs, and substantial dimensions.

It is noteworthy that the German painter Hans Holbein featured an Anatolian Turkish carpet as a background in many of his paintings between 1530–1550, and the Flemish painter Lorenzo Lotto did the same in many of his works during the first quarter of the 1500s. The specific Turkish carpet you are examining can also be seen in one of Holbein’s paintings.

Features of Uşak Carpets

Pattern and Motifs

Motifs inspired by nature, such as stylized floral designs, leaves, and vine patterns, are frequently seen, along with starry and medallion compositions.

Colors

Uşak carpets utilize rich and warm tones such as red, navy blue, golden yellow, beige, and brown. Red and navy blue are generally preferred for the background color. The use of natural root dyes ensures their colors are long-lasting and acquire a beautiful patina over time.

Material and Technique

Uşak carpets are primarily woven from wool, though silk-blended versions also exist.

The Turkish knot (symmetrical knot) is used, ensuring the carpets have a strong and durable structure.

The pile of Uşak carpets is typically thick, which gives them a soft texture. The Turkish carpets in this Commemorative Collection are also woven using the same traditional technique.

Sizes

Uşak carpets were often produced in large sizes, making them ideal for palaces and grand venues. However, examples produced in smaller dimensions are also available. You can order for any size.

Historical Significance

Ottoman Palace Carpets: Uşak carpets were used to adorn the palaces and important structures of the Ottoman Empire. They also garnered significant interest in Europe, being particularly utilized in churches and palaces. Uşak carpets were among the first Turkish carpets exported to Europe during this era.

Today

Today, Uşak carpets are exhibited in leading museums worldwide and are highly valued by antique carpet collectors. Traditional Uşak carpets continue to be produced using the original techniques and patterns and are accepted as a prestigious symbol of Turkish carpet art.
