Seljuk Carpets in the Turkish Carpet Tradition
Carpet art is one of the rich, deep-rooted artistic disciplines of the Turkish people, boasting a profound cultural heritage that extends from Central Asia through the Seljuk and Ottoman periods to the present day. It is a medium that reflects their beliefs, passions, wars, and dreams—from its colors and yarns to its motifs and techniques.

Seljuk carpets represent a significant weaving tradition developed by the Seljuk Turks who migrated from Central Asia to Anatolia starting in the 11th century, reaching its peak in the 13th century. These carpets were primarily produced in regions like Konya, Kayseri, and Sivas and stand as some of the earliest important examples of Turkish carpet weaving.

✨ Features of Seljuk Carpets

Pattern and Motifs

Geometric patterns, stylized floral motifs, and various symbols are prominent in Seljuk carpets. These designs include octagons, stars, diamond shapes (baklava dilimleri), and diverse stylized animal figures. The motifs are characterized by simplicity, repetitive arrangements, and a high degree of abstraction.

Colors

Seljuk carpets generally feature darker tones. Burgundy, navy blue, dark green, and earth tones are frequently used. The dyes were derived from natural roots and plant extracts, which granted the carpets exceptional longevity and resistance to fading over time.

Material and Technique

Seljuk carpets are typically woven from wool yarn.

The Turkish knot (symmetrical knot) was the primary weaving technique used. This technique enhanced the carpet's durability and ensured its long lifespan. The Seljuk carpets in this Commemorative Collection are also woven using the same traditional technique.

Sizes

Seljuk carpets were generally woven in large sizes, designed to fit in mosques and large public spaces. However, smaller examples also exist. You can order for any size.

Historical Significance

Foundation of the Tradition: Seljuk carpets are a crucial part of the artistic development of the Anatolian Seljuk period (11th–13th century). The oldest known Seljuk carpets, dating back to the 13th century, were discovered in the Alaeddin Mosque in Konya and the Eşrefoğlu Mosque in Beyşehir. These carpets are invaluable for understanding the roots of Turkish carpet weaving and are currently exhibited in major museums.

Inspiration for Later Eras: Seljuk carpets also formed the basis for the subsequent Ottoman carpet weaving tradition. The richness in their patterns and motifs, in particular, provided inspiration for carpets produced in later periods.

Today

Nowadays, Seljuk carpets are exhibited in leading museums worldwide and are highly valued by antique carpet collectors. Seljuk carpets continue to be produced using the original techniques and patterns and are accepted as a prestigious symbol of Turkish carpet art.
